Cute Swan shaped paddle boats and old-school row boats are a familiar sight on Ohori Park’s pond. They are still there, but as of last week a new and decisively flashy kind of paddle boat has been added to the fleet. Known as “Amenbo” (Water Strider) in Japanese they resemble water strider insects which skip across the water’s surface.
Two varieties are available for hire, a one-man version and a tandem boat for two. Operation is simple. If you can ride a bicycle you’re set. The boats are very stable and even have small compartments to store goods such as cameras and phones and there’s also a cup holder for your beverage.
Now there are three choices; row boats for a nostalgic and simple cruise, the Swans to delight children and families, and now the water strider for a more sporty ride. The boats are very popular on weekends, especially on fine days, so weekdays are strongly recommended. Enjoy!
