Walker Juice – Opens in Tenjin

Cold press juice shops are still an uncommon breed in Fukuoka, despite their popularity in the West, but Walker Juice is stepping up to bring the first boutique version of this health craze to sprout up in Tenjin. Fukuoka Now attended the pre-opening event to give you the first taste of this new juice bar.

This cute little shop is tucked just behind the Kokutai-doro, the main road between Hakata and Tenjin, and the first thing that strikes you as you step in is the robust mechanical whirring noise; this is the sound of the state-of-the-art juicer. This machine uses a slow spinning blade to create a pulp, which is then wrapped in linen and squeezed with a hydraulic press. This process keeps in the maximum amount of minerals, vitamins and enzymes. But if that’s still not healthy enough for you, a range of superfood add-ins are also available (from ¥100 each), with names so impossible to pronounce that you know they must be good for you, including Spirulina and Maquiberry. The menu is colour-coded (green, red, orange & yellow, and white), and – because your health is at the forefront of our minds – we decided to try one of each colour.

First up was Coco Veggie: pretty in pinky-orange, but don’t let that fool you. This drink packs a serious grapefruit kick, layered on top of the sweeter flavours of coconut water, lemon and pineapple. Next was Dessert, made with beets, orange, carrot, lemon and cinnamon. This vivid cherry red drink has a sweet yet gentle taste that seems to belie its appearance. Nuts Milk is a creamy, pure white drink that comes in either cashew or almond, served with your choice of maple syrup or cinnamon. We had the cashew and cinnamon, a drink that was soothing and not overly sharp or sweet; more filling than the average cold press juice, but not as strong. Last up was the Skin Trip: a rich green juice, composed of mustard green, cucumber, pineapple, grapefruit, apple and lemon. This drink is pure sweetness on first sip, then there is an explosion of vegetable and herb-y tastes which feel as if they could cure the common cold.

For superlative taste and goodness, all the ingredients need to be organic, and the juice has to be made on site, bottle by bottle. The machine itself, the Norwalk Juicer (which we have on good authority is the best juicer around), also requires expert attention and care. This all means that the Walker Juice 100% raw juice can be a little pricy, at a cool ¥900~¥1,200 per cup. But if you’re a yoga bunny, or simply want to kick start a healthy new lifestyle, these juices are a great addition to your routine. For a more drastic take, juice programs and cleanses are available, from ¥7,500 a day. Whatever your take on cold press juice, this certainly makes an interesting addition to the Fukuoka cafe scene.
