Izakaya with an amazing view of the famous Kushida Shrine.

Directly across from Kushida Shrine and almost next door to Hakata Machiya Folk Museum, Hakatabei is popular with locals on weekdays and packed with tourists on weekends. Its name refers to a style of walls made partially with pieces of broken tiles arranged in artistic patterns, and excellent examples of hakatabei can be found in this area. The first floor (counter only) and second floor (tatami seating) both offer impressive views of the beautifully illuminated Kushida Shrine while you enjoy your meal. The menu features a broad range of Kyushu dishes such as iwashi nukadaki (stewed sardines), jidori sumiyaki (charcoal-broiled free-range chicken), goma saba (raw mackerel with sesame) and satsuma age (minced fish and vegetable deep-fried dumplings). Not particular to Kyushu but highly recommended is the hearty nikujaga (meat and potatoes) for エ700. In addition to shochu, sake and beer, Hakatabei offers a selection of six wines at エ2,000 per bottle. The service is friendly, but no foreign-language assistance is available, so you may want to take along a Japanese friend to make ordering easier.
