Hakata Street Container

We’re used to seeing yatai on the sidewalks of Fukuoka, but we’ve never seen a reformed container serving burritos and donuts!

Banks (the all-night cafe and bar) and Canezees Doughnut have collaborated on a new and unusual project, with the aim of adding some diversity and spice to Fukuoka’s cafe scene. Drawing inspiration from the pop-up joints of New York (and other cities at the forefront of food fashion), they have obtained special permission from local authorities to transform a container into a pop-up cafe for a limited time only.

Open from 8:00 to 19:00, here you can pick up drip coffee (at just ¥300 a cup) or opt for something more unusual, like a white strawberry latte (¥380). For those who drop in between 8:00 and 10:00, a morning coffee is just ¥180! All the coffee is supplied by local favorite Mimatsu Specialty Roaster (based in Higashi-ku). If your vice of choice is chocolate, not caffeine, then pick up a warming hot cocoa for ¥210. Had a rough day? Why not stop by for a glass of hot wine (¥400), heated with a Jetboil (the camping chef’s best friend), or go all out with a tasting set of three glasses of different heated wines for ¥1,000. (You can also pick up a bottle for ¥1,800.)

This new place to chill is conveniently located along the main street that runs between JR Hakata Station and Canal City. Why not drop by on your way to or from the Christmas Market? This street has also been spruced up with some winter illumination, creating a nice view for those who choose to relax on the benches set up outside the container.
