City Moves to Protect Historic Scenery

On Aug. 31, Fukuoka City held a meeting of its Urban Landscape Review Board which decided to strengthen efforts to protect historic scenery in the city. Under the current Urban Landscape Ordinance, City Hall must be notified when building new structures or additions exceeding 30 m in height or 9,999 m2 in floor area, but these limits will be lowered to 14 m and 1,499 m2 in the following five historic districts: Hakozaki Shrine area (Higashi Ward), Sumiyoshi Shrine area (Hakata Ward), Gokujo/Reisen area (Hakata Ward), Maizuru/Ohori Park area (Chuo Ward) and Meinohama area (Nishi Ward). Concurrent with the City’s efforts to redevelop the Tenjin and Hakata areas, it has deemed it necessary to strengthen standards for the protection of historical landscapes given the lack of existing restrictions.
