Hakata is experiencing a hotel construction boom. According to a hotel industry representative, occupancy rates have recovered after dropping from 70% to almost 50% after the 2008 financial crisis. Now, big-name developers are pouring into Fukuoka, and the city anticipates 600 rooms will be added over the next several years. According to government statistics, the number of foreign tourists who visited Fukuoka in August was double last year’s figure, some hotels near Hakata station recorded occupancy rates over 90%. Meanwhile, the increased demand for hotel rooms has seen room rates rise by as much as 15%, the third highest uptick among Japan’s nine major cities.
