According to the winter season forecast jointly released by the Fukuoka District Meteorological Observatory and the Kagoshima Meteorological Observatory on Sept. 25, Kyushu can expect its warmest winter in six years due to the El Nino weather phenomenon off the coast of Peru. In years when the El Nino is stronger, westerly winds tend to snake northward near Japan, allowing warmer, more humid air to flow into the southern end of the country. Seasonal winds from Siberia are also expected to be weaker this winter, so Kyushu can expect higher average temperatures and average precipitation in the north and higher precipitation in the south.
