My Number Starts Soon, but Cards Will Arrive Later

According to sources interviewed by Nishinippon Shimbun, most residents of Kyushu can expect to receive their 12-digit Social Security and Tax Numbers (aka “My Number”) sometime in or after November. The system officially launches on Oct. 5, but the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has not indicated an exact time frame for when citizens can expect their My Number Cards. Given the sheer number of cards that need to be delivered by simple registered mail—55 million households nationwide, 590,000 of which are in Kyushu—people should not expect their cards to arrive anytime soon. Some people have complained that the national government’s PR efforts have been vague, and the local municipalities tasked with carrying out the task have been inundated with calls.
