Summer nights in Fukuoka and across Kyushu come alive with spectacular fireworks displays. From July through November, festivals light up riversides, beaches, and harbours, each offering its own unique setting and atmosphere. In recent years, many events have evolved beyond traditional fireworks, incorporating synchronized music, dramatic lighting effects, and large-scale autumn displays.

54th Miyawaka Noryo Fireworks Festival (Miyawaka City, Fukuoka)

The summer tradition of Miyawaka City, the cool evening fireworks festival, features approximately 30 food and game stalls at the venue. Starting at 8 PM, 3,000 fireworks will be launched, creating a spectacular display.

Ashiya Fireworks Festival (Onga-gun, Fukuoka)

A long-running fireworks festival in the Kitakyushu area, this event dates back to the Taisho era and has a history spanning more than a century. Around 5,000 fireworks are launched from barges on the Onga River, lighting up the summer night sky and reflecting brilliantly across the water.

Highlights include powerful large-shell fireworks and the festival’s signature “Niagara Falls” display, a dazzling curtain of light stretching approximately 250 meters across the river and connecting its two banks. Drawing large crowds each year, the event remains a beloved summer tradition and a seasonal landmark in the region.

Nogata Summer Festival 2026 (Nogata City, Fukuoka)

Nogata’s signature summer festival reaches its climax with the thrilling Oiyamakasa, the finale of the 400-year-old Nogata Yamakasa tradition. As the excitement settles, approximately 6,000 fireworks light up the night sky above the Onga River. Around 170 festival stalls line the venue, creating a lively atmosphere that draws crowds from across the region.

367th Chikugo River Fireworks Festival (Kurume City, Fukuoka)

Dating back to 1650, this is one of western Japan’s largest and oldest fireworks festivals, having begun as a dedication display celebrating the completion of Suitengu Shrine. Approximately 12,000 fireworks are launched from two sites along the Chikugo River, with six viewing areas, including Kyo-machi and Sasayama, offering spectacular views of the display.

*Due to the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake and its ongoing impact, this event has been canceled.

55th Yume Hanabi (Ogori City, Fukuoka)

Organized by the Mii Junior Chamber, a group of young volunteers from Ogori and surrounding communities, this fireworks festival marks its 55th edition in 2026. Under the theme “Toward a Future We Cherish,” the display expresses the organizers’ hope of passing pride in and affection for the local community on to the next generation.

39th Kanmon Kaikyo Fireworks Festival

One of western Japan’s leading fireworks festivals, this joint event is held by Moji Ward in Kitakyushu and Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi, on opposite sides of the Kanmon Strait separating Honshu and Kyushu. Fireworks are launched from both shores, with rapid volleys of large shells and music-synchronized displays on the Moji side, and underwater fireworks and large shaku-dama shells on the Shimonoseki side. Viewing areas are open only to holders of sponsorship tickets.

50th Nakagawa Citizen’s Festival (Nakagawa City, Fukuoka)

One of Nakagawa’s largest summer festivals, the event features stage performances ranging from dance to live music, along with food trucks and local specialties. Fireworks are launched from two sites, the rice fields south of Mirika Loden and Nakagawa Minami Junior High School, filling the summer night sky. A free shuttle bus runs between JR Hakata-Minami Station and the venue on the day of the festival.

Amagigawa Fireworks (Asakura City, Fukuoka)

Approximately 4,000 fireworks illuminate the night sky above the Koishiwara River, their reflections shimmering on the water. Held in conjunction with the traditional Nagare Kanjo memorial service, which offers prayers for ancestors, family well-being, and abundant harvests, the event also features a floating lantern ceremony.

Mizuta Tenmangu Sentomyo Fireworks Festival (Chikugo City, Fukuoka)

Held during the annual summer festival at Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine, this intimate fireworks event combines tradition with a festive atmosphere. The highlight is the Sentomyo, when around 1,000 scallop-shell oil lamps illuminate the shrine’s historic romon gate. Festival stalls and dedication fireworks complete this enchanting summer evening.

Hanabi Douranbachi (Kurume City, Fukuoka)

With a history spanning some 360 years, this traditional ritual at Oji Wakamiya Hachimangu Shrine is designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Fukuoka Prefecture. At the heart of the event is the Hachinosu (“Beehive”), a towering pyrotechnic structure measuring about 4 m high and 2.5 m in diameter. Once ignited, it erupts with a thunderous roar, sending showers of sparks in every direction to resemble a swarm of bees taking flight. The dramatic display is dedicated each year on September 15, with prayers for abundant harvests and protection from disease.

Wasshoi Fireworks 2026 (Kokurakita Ward, Kitakyushu City)

The fireworks show provides the grand finale to Wasshoi Hyakuman Natsu Matsuri, Kitakyushu’s largest citizen-participation festival. For around 10 minutes, fireworks illuminate the night sky above Katsuyama Park, bringing the two-day celebration to a spectacular close.

Make a wish come true! Kaiun Fireworks Festival (Fukutsu City, Fukuoka)

The fireworks display brings the Autumn Grand Festival, Miyajidake Shrine’s largest annual celebration, to a close. Fireworks light up the autumn night sky with prayers that the wishes of worshippers will be fulfilled. During the day, the shrine grounds come alive with traditional performances and festival stalls before the celebration concludes with the evening’s dedicatory fireworks.

102nd Iizuka Noryo Fireworks Festival (Iizuka City, Fukuoka)

Dating back to 1922, this is one of Chikuho’s best-known fireworks festivals, with a history of more than a century. Around 7,000 fireworks illuminate the night sky above the Onga River, while large-scale pyrotechnic displays, including a spectacular Niagara Falls effect, are among the highlights. Festival stalls line the area around the venue, attracting around 100,000 visitors each year.

Itoshima Citizens’ Festival (Itoshima City, Fukuoka)

The fireworks display marks the grand finale of the Itoshima Citizens’ Festival. Around 4,000 fireworks are launched in sync with music, lighting up the night sky above Kafuri Fishing Port. Before the display, visitors can enjoy pre-show performances, including traditional taiko drumming.

Kukinoumi Fireworks Festival (Wakamatsu Ward, Kitakyushu City)

One of Kitakyushu’s signature fireworks festivals, this event takes place over Dokai Bay beneath the iconic Wakato Bridge. Around 4,500 fireworks are launched from barges on the bay, creating the dramatic spectacle unique to a waterfront display. Reflections of light shimmering across the water add to the event’s unforgettable atmosphere.

12th Kyushu Biggest Fireworks Festival (Sasebo City, Nagasaki)

One of western Japan’s largest fireworks events, this spectacular autumn display features approximately 22,000 fireworks. Highlights include giant shaku-dama shells and wide starmine displays choreographed to music, filling the night sky above Huis Ten Bosch on an impressive scale. The grand finale culminates in a breathtaking panorama of fireworks stretching across the entire skyline.
