Sumo Style Talk Event

his sumo themed talk event is held by free paper company Club King to promote their upcoming business project “Dictionary Club Fukuoka School”. The goal of the new project is to discover and develop next generation leaders in Fukuoka. Two main guest speakers at the event are famous celebrity “brain scientist” Kenichi Mogi, and Japanese illustrator/actor Lily Franky. Mogi comes from the east of Japan, Franky comes from the west – and thus the event is “sumo themed”, including a sumo stage. International Symposium: Open Data in Urban City & Case Studies in Asia

The Fukuoka Asian Urban Research Center (URC) has been working on a research project with the theme of “user-friendly city planning” this year. During the course of the research, they focused on “Open Data”, or the idea that certain data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control. Frederick Peeters Conference – La Semaine de la Francophonie 2013

Since 1995, “La semaine de la Francophonie” has provided the opportunity for French-speaking countries around the world to organize special annual events in celebration of the French language, French-speaking countries and their cultures. United States Consulate Fukuoka – LGBT Symposium

The U.S. Consulate General in Osaka, Patrick J. Linehan met his spouse, Emerson Kanegusuke, in Tokyo 10 years ago and were married in Canada in 2007. He has been at the forefront of the LGBT issue, energetically carrying out his duties as a diplomat and public servant. For this event, Consul General Linehan will be joined by a panel of local activists to discuss the current status of LGBT issues in Japan and the United States. The topic is the “Status of LGBT Issues in Japan and the United States: Aiming for a World That Recognizes & Values Diversity”. The event will be conducted completely in Japanese.

The American Consulate Fukuoka is hosting the US-Japan Space Cooperation Symposium on ‘space debris’ at the Fukuoka American Center on Friday, January 25. As explained in the attached Japanese-language program, issues related to space debris will have much bearing on our daily lives due to our increasing reliance on satellites in the orbit – such as for GPS and weather forecast. Don’t miss the TEDxFukuokaWomen event this weekend – it’s the only TEDxWomen event being held in Japan. TED, a non-profit organization devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading”, aims to engage people across the world using video technology with locally-organized events to create a space for deep discussion. TEDxFukuoka aims to contribute to strengthening Fukuoka’s cultural atmosphere by creating an united environment to explore this year’s theme of “The Space Between”, aiming to identify the areas where women seek greater understanding and compromise.The first half of the event is a live screening of the TEDxWomen conference in Washington, followed by a discussion. The second half is a series of presentations from local speakers, including Yukari Murayama, the Director of the Fukuoka Gender Equality Centre, on the theme “Ambitions”.
