Sumo Style Talk Event
his sumo themed talk event is held by free paper company Club King to promote their upcoming business project “Dictionary Club Fukuoka School”. The goal of the new project is to discover and develop next generation leaders in Fukuoka. Two main guest speakers at the event are famous celebrity “brain scientist” Kenichi Mogi, and Japanese illustrator/actor Lily Franky. Mogi comes from the east of Japan, Franky comes from the west – and thus the event is “sumo themed”, including a sumo stage. AdTech Kyushu
Digital marketing’s number one conference worldwide comes to Kyushu this June. ad:tech kyushu aims to bring together marketers from all over the world to discuss subjects important to success in all sizes of businesses today such as direct marketing, social media and ROIdriven campaigns. In addition to keynote sessions, ad:tech kyushu 2013 includes a free pass to the public exhibition hall. Rei Shito’s Street Fashion Tips
Rei Shito is undoubtedly Japan’s most popular street fashion photographer. Her website STYLE from TOKYO has gained worldwide attention. She takes pictures all over the world, but her photos are mainly of everyday Tokyo street fashion scenes, especially around Harajuku. Before she started her own blog, Shito worked at STREET/FRUiTS/TUNE, street fashion magazines in Japan, as a photographer and doing PR for several years. International Symposium: Open Data in Urban City & Case Studies in Asia
The Fukuoka Asian Urban Research Center (URC) has been working on a research project with the theme of “user-friendly city planning” this year. During the course of the research, they focused on “Open Data”, or the idea that certain data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control. Join this symposium to discuss the possibilities of Open Data and the future of a user-friendly city. There will be Japanese – English simultaneous interpretation.

Frederick Peeters Conference – La Semaine de la Francophonie 2013
Since 1995, “La semaine de la Francophonie” has provided the opportunity for French-speaking countries around the world to organize special annual events in celebration of the French language, French-speaking countries and their cultures. Around one thousand events happen worldwide, including in Japan, where the French Institutes host special activities. This year, French Institut of Fukuoka is putting Switzerland under the spotlight with two events in March. Popular Swiss comic artist from Geneva, Frederick Peeters, will give a conference at the Kitakyushu Manga Museum on March 21 (Thu.) United States Consulate Fukuoka – LGBT Symposium
The U.S. Consulate General in Osaka, Patrick J. Linehan met his spouse, Emerson Kanegusuke, in Tokyo 10 years ago and were married in Canada in 2007. He has been at the forefront of the LGBT issue, energetically carrying out his duties as a diplomat and public servant. For this event, Consul General Linehan will be joined by a panel of local activists to discuss the current status of LGBT issues in Japan and the United States. The topic is the “Status of LGBT Issues in Japan and the United States: Aiming for a World That Recognizes & Values Diversity”. The event will be conducted completely in Japanese.

TEDxFukuoka “Meadow of Concepts” Live Stream
TEDxFukuoka, “Meadow of Concepts” will be held on February 16, 2013. The event features 13 incredible speakers who each embody the passion and inspiration behind TED (technology, entertainment and design), to share their inspiration and ideas with you, Fukuoka, and the world. Speakers are as follows: Yusuke Engeorge, GOND-TUNE, Toshiyuki Inoko, John Kluge, Michael Lindenmayer, Kenjiro Matsuo, Kyoko Matsuoka, Yu-saku Mochizuki, Koichi Nakayama, Tsuneo Noda, Himi Okajima, Junto Ohki, Yuji Sakikawa. US-Japan Space Cooperation Symposium on Space Debris
The American Consulate Fukuoka is hosting the US-Japan Space Cooperation Symposium on ‘space debris’ at the Fukuoka American Center on Friday, January 25. As explained in the attached Japanese-language program, issues related to space debris will have much bearing on our daily lives due to our increasing reliance on satellites in the orbit – such as for GPS and weather forecast. Learn more about the issues, with lectures by professionals in the field from institutions including NASA and JAXA and Kyushu University. There will be simultaneous English/Japanese interpretation. Don’t miss the TEDxFukuokaWomen event this weekend – it’s the only TEDxWomen event being held in Japan. TED, a non-profit organization devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading”, aims to engage people across the world using video technology with locally-organized events to create a space for deep discussion. TEDxFukuoka aims to contribute to strengthening Fukuoka’s cultural atmosphere by creating an united environment to explore this year’s theme of “The Space Between”, aiming to identify the areas where women seek greater understanding and compromise.The first half of the event is a live screening of the TEDxWomen conference in Washington, followed by a discussion. The second half is a series of presentations from local speakers, including Yukari Murayama, the Director of the Fukuoka Gender Equality Centre, on the theme “Ambitions”. The event will close with an after-party beginning at 17:00 (¥2,000 with alcohol; ¥1,500 without).
