Contemporary Dance Performance in Hakata: “A Carrot Thrust into Bobbed Hair”

START: Oct 10, 2014 END: Oct 11, 2014

Tending towards the avant-garde, Masakichi is a contemporary dancer and choreographer based in Fukuoka. A lover of carrots and bob haircuts, she pursues a jarring aesthetic of the sweet and striking – defining her distinctive dance as “petite-traumatic-cute.”

As a child Masakichi studied classical ballet, going on to perform in Japan’s famous Shiki Theatre Company. After featuring in popular stage shows “The Lion King” and “Beauty and The Beast” she moved to England, encountering a variety of dance forms until her passion for contemporary dance emerged. Returning to Japan in 2005, Masakuchi began to perform her own contemporary dance shows, billed at dance festivals such as “Let’s Go Dancing!” (organized by Japan Contemporary Dance Network – JCDN) and “Fukuoka Dance Fringe Festival” (organized by Co.D.ex). Later, she met theatre director Erica Yamada while involved in the production “ARASHI” produced by the FFAC (Fukuoka City Foundation for Arts and Cultural Promotion), and has been involved in many of Yamada’s theatre productions as choreographer as well as dancer. In 2008, Masakichi started to work closely with Yamada to create a dance solo production called “Dancing Girl Project”, holding their first independent production of dance performance in October 2013 at FUCA (Fukuoka Urban Community of Art).
