JOURNEY OF THE SOUL – Exhibition by Hervé Constant

START: Nov 11, 2014 END: Nov 16, 2014

Hervé Constant is a French artist based in London. This November, however, an exhibition of his work will be held at the EnjoySpaceDaimyo gallery in Fukuoka. The exhibition is entitled ‘Journey of the Soul’ and will feature a wide selection of his paintings, photographs, films and prints.

Constant was born in Casablanca, Morocco and has since lived and studied in Paris, Toulon and London. These diverse cultural experiences have heavily influenced his work. He writes, ‘my work is inspired by my study of the human condition. We have much to learn from cultures and art which are not our own. They may be very different visually and aesthetically, but their universal themes show us all to be members of a single human family.’

While his art has previously been exhibited in Europe, this will be Constant’s artistic debut in Japan. Although European culture has inspired his work, the themes and images explored in his paintings cross cultural divides.

For example, this new exhibition includes paintings inspired by 15th century European tarot cards, which may be unfamiliar to Japanese audiences. Yet in the images on the cards (originally used to predict a person’s future or spiritual state) Constant finds messages concerning mankind’s relationships with nature and the natural cycles of life – concepts that are certainly not confined to the European continent.

Through this exploration of cross-cultural concepts, Constant hopes that his Japanese audience will relate to a uniquely European art form. Likewise, Constant also hopes that his time in Japan will leave its own mark on his work and enhance his own personal and artistic journey.
