After a year coaching baseball and teaching Japanese in Brazil, Teruyoshi “Silvio” Yamaguchi returned to work in his family’s vegetable and fresh produce business. Encouraged by fellow Brazilian aficionados, including Avispa soccer fans, he decided to fill a glaring gap in Fukuoka’s dining scene and international community by opening a delightful restaurant and bar in Imaizumi. The home-style dishes are superb! Churrasco (grilled meats), sirloin steak, and pork sausage, cooked over charcoal are the gaucho’s (cowboy’s) favorite, and likely yours too. Other must-tries include the Salgadinhos, small savory snacks of which many are filled and fried pastries, Feijoada (black bean stew), and Salada de Palmito (made with palm hearts). A can of the tart-tasting Guarana Antarctica, a carbonated soft-drink made with caffeine-rich berries from the Amazon basin, is a nice accompaniment; or for more punch, order a Caipirinha (sugar cane spirit) cocktail. The reasonably priced lunch sets (680 yen ~) are a good way to get acquainted with the different foods.
