Mining Memories: the Coal-Miner Who Turned to Painting – Ticket Giveaway!

START: Jun 6, 2015 END: Jul 26, 2015

Sakubei Yamamoto was born to a river boatman in 1892. He worked as a coal miner for almost half a century, and received no education in the arts. But using his amazing memory, the cheapest possible paper, and children’s paints, he has created evocative records of the lives and labours of the Chikuho miners. His unique technique and perspective have been said to give rise to a mixture of comfort and nostalgia. In 2011, Yamamoto’s works were certified as a Memory of the World by Unesco, but, because they are so vulnerable to damage, they are rarely seen. Now they are receiving their grandest display yet, being shown alongside videos and other materials, all designed to help viewers fully understand the atmosphere from which his works were born. For the last week of this exhibit, we have one pair of tickets to give away. To be in with a chance of winning, simply register using this form. The winner will be chosen on 07/19 at 16:00, and contacted the same day. The lucky recipient will be informed the same day, and can collect Tue. ~ Fri. next week (7/21 ~ 7/24), 10:00~18:00pm.
