: (English) Fukutsu City “Snapper Chazuke Fair”

(English) Fukutsu City is currently holding a “Snapper Chazuke Fair” to spread the word about the city’s most famous seafood item, snapper. Chazuke is a simple Japanese dish made by pouring green tea, dashi, or hot water over cooked rice roughly in the same proportion as milk over cereal, usually with savoury toppings. Nineteen restaurants in Fukutsu City are offering an original chazuke with snapper, for lunch or dinner. This fair has been held since 2011 to boost interest in Fukutsu City. (English) Hard Rock Cafe is celebrating Mexico this May, with month-long Cinco De Mayo specials! Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “fifth of May”) is a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride held on May 5, in the United States and Mexico. Hard Rock Cafe is extending the celebrations across the whole month of May, with limited menu items including the “Mexican Burger” and the “Melon Rita” – a melon flavour margarita. From 2013, this international flea market will be held twice a year – in Spring and Autumn (in the past it was just Autumn)! The approach to the Sumiyoshi Shrine will be lined with unique stalls selling homewares, accessories, clothes and more. As you wander the markets, indulge in some tasty international treats at the food court, including booths by many of Fukuoka’s most popular international restaurants. If it’s a drink you’re after, stop at the world beer corner and sample various labels of beer from all over the world. The Spring event will be “yoichi” meaning the stalls will stay open until night.

(English) Following last year’s success, the Keyaki Dori music festival returns for a second time this year. Keyaki-dori is only 800 meters long, running from Kego intersection to Akasaka 3-chome intersection, but it packs a lot of charm into that seemingly short distance. Enjoy the showcase of great musical performances, plus food and market stalls down the entire stretch of Keyaki-dori. One of the main acts is a professional jazz, cello and guitar show.

: (English) The First Zen Temple Shofukuji – Exhibition

(English) A special exhibition is now on at Fukuoka City Museum to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the first Zen temple in Japan “Shofukuji”. This beautiful temple including a spacious garden area (open to public) is located within walking distance of Hakata Station. Most of the buildings are off limits to visitors, so this exhibition is a very rare chance to see this historic collection including many priceless elements which have never been loaned out before. One of the highlights of the collection is the oldest wooden sculpture of the Buddhist monk Daruma, a patriarch of Zen. No one knows who made it but it is believed to belong to the Nanbokucho period (1336~1392). Besides this, there are more than 200 treasures of most important temple – and a treasure of Fukuoka.
