(English) his sumo themed talk event is held by free paper company Club King to promote their upcoming business project “Dictionary Club Fukuoka School”. The goal of the new project is to discover and develop next generation leaders in Fukuoka. Two main guest speakers at the event are famous celebrity “brain scientist” Kenichi Mogi, and Japanese illustrator/actor Lily Franky. Mogi comes from the east of Japan, Franky comes from the west – and thus the event is “sumo themed”, including a sumo stage. (English) “DESIGNING?” Exhibition
(English) The 9th annual “DESIGNING?” exhibition starts in Fukuoka City this weekend, with the motto “Design leads the town better”. This year’s theme is “time” and participants have each interpreted this in their unique spaces for the viewer’s enjoyment. See an array of artworks at select galleries and shops at twenty spots in Fukuoka City until May 19. The event’s main venue is Kego Park in Tenjin, where you can catch talk events, workshops, cafes and and an open-space library until May 13.

(English) Following last year’s success, this local gourmet event expands to two locations on Watanabe-dori for 2013! Drink, eat, dance and enjoy the festival atmosphere on Sunday May 12. The first location (Denki Building) includes the exciting Haruyoshi Teppan Battle, in which 11 food booths compete for the grand prize of ¥100,000. Sample delicious fried foods from the booths for ¥500, and cast your vote to help decide the winning booth. At a second location (Sun Selco Hiroba) you can enjoy food booths, stage events and live performances.

(English) Bayside Place is honoring Tsushima Island for Golden Week, with a two-day “Tsushima Fair”. Tsushima Island is an island of the Japanese archipelago situated in the middle of the Tsushima Strait, and part of Nagasaki Prefecture. Come down to Bayside to enjoy barbecued seafood including fresh oysters and abalone from Tsushima. There’s a “Tsushima Tonchan Butai” B-1 Grand-Prix featuring delicious grilled pork, and you can learn a thing or two about fish preparation from the tuna cleaning show. (English) Golden Week at JR Hakata City is great for families with lots of fun activities on offer. Tokyu Hands is holding handicraft workshops: ukulele making (4/27 (Sat.) ~ 4/29 (Mon.), ¥1,000) and leather animal (¥200) or wool accessory (¥300) making (5/5 (Sun.) ~ 6 (Mon.).
