(English) Zoo Attendance Back Up
(English) Last year, the Fukuoka Zoo and Botanical Garden attracted 810,683 visitors, marking the first total annual admissions of more than 800,000 in 16 years. These figures suggest the various facilities upgrades that the Zoo has been undertaking are starting to take effect. In 2006, the City allocated ¥900 million toward a 20-year renewal project, and to date the Zoo has updated facilities for the elephants and chimpanzees. In 2008 a slope car was installed to enhance barrier-free access, and last October a habitat was created where orangutans and lar gibbons live together. This fall, the Zoo is scheduled to complete new facilities for the leopards and Malayan sun bears. The City has said it intends to “attract even more people since 2013 marks the 60th anniversary of the Zoo’s opening.” Source: Nishinippon Shimbun, Apr. 18

(English) Ministry to Reorganize Japan’s Airspace
(English) The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, (MLIT) is planning a reorganisation of controlled airspace in Japan – with proposed changes scheduled for 2016. An increase in low cost carrier (LCC) airlines in Japan, along with increased aviation demands from Asia’s economic growth have caused problems in the air recently, such as traffic jams. Flight paths have been overlapping, causing detours in the air and delays. Japan’s airspace is currently dimensionally divided into five sections, each managed by separate air traffic control centers. MLIT hopes to finalize the airspace reorganization by summer – planning to change and combine certain sections (including the Fukuoka airspace) to alleviate traffic jams. The MLIT is also going to invest in a “General Control Information” system to decrease the workload of air traffic controllers. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun, April 16

(English) Fukuoka Free Wi-Fi Eyes Expansion
(English) Fukuoka City Wi-Fi, one of the largest free public wireless internet networks in Japan, celebrated its first year in operation. The network started with 16 access points from which smartphone and laptop users can access sightseeing information for free. There are now around 200 access points in 53 locations including Fukuoka Airport, Hakata International Port and all of the City’s subway stations. The network now averages 2,800 hits per day, three times more than when the service was launched, and information is offered in four languages. City Hall wants to expand the network to include bus stops and shopping centers, but due to installation and maintenance costs, it is having trouble finding companies willing to join in the effort. A list of access points can be found on the Fukuoka City homepage (http://www.city.fukuoka.lg.jp/wi-fi/english/index.html). Source: Nishinippon Shimbun, Apr. 16
