With 500 years history, this festival sees two teams of loincloth-clad participants braving the cold to scramble for possession of an 8kg wooden ball. Victory for the Beach Team is said to ensure a plentiful catch of fish for the coming year, while a Land Team victory brings a bountiful harvest.

Open Lecture by Yusuf Estes

On October 12th, Kyushu University’s Hakozaki Campus will be visited by Mr. Yusuf Estes – an American Muslim preacher and teacher who converted from Christianity to Islam in the 1990’s. He will be delivering a lecture on the “missing” factor in today’s technology-driven world at Kyushu University, followed by a dinner event. Take this unique chance to meet face-to-face with Mr. Estes. Organized by KUMSA, Kyushu University Al-Nour Culture Center.

The Appealing Hakozaki Shrine and its Historical Sakura Gate

Hojoya is a festival heralding the advent of autumn in Hakata. It is a lively event during which many open-air stalls line the approach to the Hakozaki shrine. Many people turn out in the evening, when the site is well-lit by lanterns. The festival is held to offer compassion to all life, and to admonish the taking of life. It has been held continuously for more than 1,000 years.

Hojoya

One of the “big three” Hakata festivals, no Autumn in Fukuoka is complete without a trip to Hojoya! Along with Shinto rituals, the 1km approach to Hakozakigu Shrine is lined with around 500 busy stalls. This 1,000 year-old festival is a great way to herald in Autumn.
