Aso Geopark, Kumamoto, has applied to the Japan Geopark Committee to be recognized as a Global Geopark. Attractions at the Aso Geopark include the largest active volcano in Japan, a caldera and the outer rim of a volcanic crater. To become recognized as a Global Geopark, Aso must be designated by UNESCO as “a territory encompassing one or more sites of scientific importance, not only for geological reasons but also by virtue of its archaeological, ecological or cultural value.” Source: http://www.nikkei.com
