City To Provide Utilities To Yatai, Will Collect Fees

In fiscal 2015 Fukuoka City will begin making improvements to the water, sewage and electrical systems available to yatai (food stall) operators. Amendments to the Fukuoka City Yatai Ordinance mandating that operators use the City’s utilities for a fee have been proposed to the City Assembly, which is currently in session. “We want to work with the operators to create a vibrant yatai culture,” said a City official. The move is part of the City’s efforts to standardize yatai operations amid claims of foul odors and people dumping wastewater in street gutters. City Hall will spend ¥43 million to build the utility network and plans to charge yatai operators ¥1,200 a month for water and sewage and ¥800 a month for electricity.
