Construction of a second runway at Fukuoka Airport has been announced. The increased capacity will relieve congestion and increase the number of visitors from overseas. The second runway could become operational in approximately 10 years from now. Fukuoka Airport is the nation’s third busiest airport reaching 19.29 million passengers annually in 2013, however it only has one runway. Delays in takeoffs are not uncommon. The plans calls for a 2,500-meter runway west of the current 2,800-meter runway. The total cost for this will be about ¥180 billion much of which is expected to be earned by selling the operation rights of the airport to a private business. The government predicts an additional 1.22 million passengers per year and economic benefits of ¥108.2 billion. Source: http://the-japan-news.com/news/article/0001827942
