Fukuoka Airport To Go Private In 2017

On. Nov. 13, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced its intention to privatize the management of Fukuoka Airport as early as fiscal 2017. Governor Ogawa is now expected to express his support for the outsourcing initiative at a meeting of the Special Airport Review Committee on Nov. 20. This move paves the way for construction to start next year on a new runway at Fukuoka Airport, which is slated for completion in 2024.The total cost of the project is estimated at ¥180 billion, with the national government responsible for ¥110 billion. A portion of these costs will be covered by the sale of facility management rights. This would make Fukuoka the second airport in Japan after Sendai to attempt such a sale, a maneuver that was made possible with the passage of last year’s Act on Airport Management through Utilization of Private Capabilities.
