An increasing number of call centers are setting up shop in Fukuoka’s office buildings. Ever since the Great East Japan Earthquake, companies headquartered in Tokyo have been looking to disperse risk by opening up offices in different parts of Japan. With its comparatively low risk of earthquakes, growing population, and local talent pool, Fukuoka City has been a popular destination for many call centers. Companies that have opened up call centers here include a subsidiary of KDDI, MassMutual Life Insurance, whose office also duplicates some functions of headquarters, and Nippon Seimei, another insurance company. Amazon Japan is scheduled to open a call center in Hakata Ward in September. Meanwhile, companies who have been operating out of Fukuoka since before the disaster expect increased competition for limited human resources going forward. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 7/21
