On Apr. 16 Fukuoka City and Nishi-nippon Railroad Co. announced they will adopt a bus rapid transit (BRT) system to reduce the amount of traffic in the downtown areas. BRTs typically feature dedicated busways and bi-articulated buses. Fukuoka will plan a new system in or after 2016 that will link Tenjin, Hakata Station and Hakata Wharf on a loop. Nishitetsu will add two bi-articulated buses in 2016 with the aim of upping that number to 15 by 2020. In the meantime, City Hall will begin discussing dedicated bus lanes with the prefectural police and relevant agencies. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 4/17
