Fukuoka Zoo Welcomes New Female Giraffe

On July 18, Fukuoka City Mayor, Soichiro Takashima and the general public welcomed a new female giraffe to Fukuoka Zoo. The two year old, 3m tall giraffe (yet to be named) was brought to Fukuoka from the US on June 28, with hopes that she will someday become partner for Fukuoka Zoo’s eleven year old male giraffe Kiboo. Those present at the giraffe’s debut appearance included Mayor Takashima, as well as kindergarten children from local Kirin (Giraffe) Nursery who sang songs to welcome her. At some point over the next few years, as the giraffe grows and bonds with Kiboo, zookeepers plan to remove the fence that currently separates the two giraffes in hopes of breeding. You can visit the new addition to Fukuoka Zoo’s animal family between 9:00~13:00 (cancelled in case of rain). Fukuoka Zoo is open 9:00~17:00.
