Fukuoka’s Kego Fault Reexamined

According to a detailed survey conducted by Institute of Seismology and Volcanology at Kyushu University, the Kego fault, the fissure responsible for the 2005 Fukuoka earthquake, has two asperities—”stuck” zones that can cause strong tremors—along its southeastern end. A prediction issued by Fukuoka Prefecture places the maximum intensity of potential quake along this part of the fault zone at Shindo 7, which would result in 1,183 deaths, but the Institute says the “intensities of quakes around the zone and predicted damages could be larger [than anticipated]”. The two asperities are located under Chuo-ku and under Onojo City, respectively. The Institute has been surveying the southeastern end of the fault line since 2011 and is scheduled to release its final report by the end of May. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 3/24
