On July 23 Nagoya-based Toyota Tsusho held an opening ceremony for a tuna hatchery in Goto City (Goto Islands, Nagasaki Pref.). The hatchery plays off of Kinki University’s recent successes in full-cycle tuna aquaculture. Kinki University first succeeded in hatching tuna eggs in captivity in 2002 in Setouchi Town, Kagoshima, Pref. Toyota Tsusho has been working Kinki University on commercializing tuna aquaculture since 2010. The hatchery will begin by raising 40,000 fish fry a year and plans to increase that number to 300,000 by March 2020, after the completion of a second hatchery facility.
