Hand-foot-mouth Outbreak Sweeps Japan

There is a nationwide outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease among Japanese infants and toddlers. According to statistics compiled by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, the total number of hand, foot and mouth disease patients recorded at 3,000 pediatric departments around Japan this year has reached 130,000. Weekly patient numbers in all of Kyushu’s prefectures, excluding Saga, have exceeded the warning level of five per week. The nationwide average this week was 8.83 patients per hospital, which is the second only to the 11.0 patients at the peak of the 2011 outbreak. Physicians are urging people to wash their hands to prevent the spread of hand, foot and mouth disease—a viral syndrome characterized by small rashes inside and around the mouth and on the hands and feet.
