The electronic parts manufacturer ROHM Semiconductor announced on Sep. 3 the beginning of its own strawberries’ cultivation in a plant factory in Fukuoka and will start shipping in December. Making the best use of LED illumination and sensors to control the temperature, the illumination, as well as the level of humidity, and using ten times less agricultural chemicals than usual, they estimate that they will harvest 14.8 tons a year, which is seven to ten times more strawberries than a traditional outdoor cultivation. ROHM also intends to sell this new technology to revolutionize the agricultural sector and considers equipping more factories during next summer. Source: Nihon Keizai Shimbun 9/3
