Kyuden May Scrap Reactor At Genkai

Kyushu Electric Power Co. (“Kyuden”) is considering shuttering the No. 1 reactor at its in Genkai Town, Saga Prefecture. The 559,000 kW reactor will turn 40 next year, which is the age at which reactors are supposed to be decommissioned according to the Nuclear Reactor Regulation Act that was revised after the Great East Japan Earthquake. Genkai’s four reactors have been shut down since the March 2011 disaster, and Kyuden must decide what to do with the No. 1 reactor as well a the aging No. 2 reactor that went into operation in 1981. “Considering the state of the facility, we will look at the cost benefit and make our decision in light of discussions at the national level,” stated Kyuden president Michiaki Uryu. The company is expected to make its final decision before the end of the fiscal year. In the meantime, Kyuden anticipates it can right the ship as long as it can obtain permission to restart the No. 3 and 4 reactors at Genkai and the No. 1 and 2 reactors at the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant (Kagoshima Prefecture).
