Kyushu Electric power has confirmed that it will seek reductions in power consumption of at least 5%. A government committee predicted that if the nuclear power reactors aren’t restarted, and the summer temperatures are as hot as those in 2010, Kyushu Electric could have a power supply shortfall of 3.7%. The utility itself said that if July is particularly hot, the power shortfall that month could be 4.6%. If this is added to the minimum surplus capacity of 3% required in case of trouble to the equipment, consumption cutbacks approaching 10% could be required.
