On Sept. 21, the Ministry of land, infrastructure, transport and tourism indicated “there is no choice but to outsource [Fukuoka] airport operations to the private sector” due to a lack of funding. The ministry had previously said that outsourcing was a possibility and was not a precondition for building additional runway at airport. Alleviating tight schedules at the airport was also a key issue in a recently implemented demand forecast. The ministry’s announcement is likely to speed up discussions by Fukuoka Prefecture and other stakeholders on outsourcing operations. The Prefecture is scheduled to solicit the opinions of local residents around December. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 9/22
