Fukuoka Airport Building Co., Nishi-nippon Railroad and Tokyo-based Mitsukoshi-Isetan Holdings will soon form a joint venture with the aim of opening an airport-style duty free shop inside the Mitsukoshi department store in Tenjin next April. The shop will occupy about 1,300 m² of floor space on the 9th floor of Mitsukoshi, and the foreign visitors and outbound Japanese who shop in the new store can pick up their purchases at the airport or port. Shares of the new company, tentatively named Fukuoka Duty Free, will be split 60:30:10 among Fukuoka Airport Building, Nishitetsu and Mitsukoshi-Isetan Holdings, and all three companies will provide workers. The aim of the move is to tap into foreign tourist spending amid a dramatic uptick in Chinese and other foreign visitors to Kyushu, particularly on cruise ships. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 5/30
