In a survey of Japanese volcanologists conducted by Nishinippon Shimbun, the Sendai nuclear power plant in Satsumasendai City, Kagoshima was chosen as having the highest risk of volcano damage. Eighteen of 29 survey respondents said the Sendai plant, which is located 40km north of the Aira Caldera (home to Sakurajima), was “at risk” of volcano damage, followed by 15 who chose the Tomari plant in Hokkaido. Thirteen of the 18 who chose Sendai also said they were against the plant’s slated restart this summer, citing a lack of discussion on the potential risk of volcanoes.
