Auckland Agrees to Rebuild Garden Next to City Zoo

The City of Auckland New Zealand has agreed to rebuild a Japanese style garden it tore down in Auckland earlier this year. The garden, complete with a pond and a stone bridge, was originally built in 1989 inside a park next to the City Zoo, but it was removed this January following a November 2013 call from the City of Auckland in which they said they planned to move the park. Fukuoka City officials say they never received a rebuilding plan, but Mayor Soichiro Takashima recently received word from the mayor of Auckland promising to rebuild the garden within the same park by 2016, the year of the 30th anniversary of sister city relations. “I hope they make a better garden while keeping the feel of the old one,” said Nishi-nippon Junior College Professor Kubota, the former city landscape architect involved in the design of the initial garden.
