A chestnut tiger butterfly photographed in Dazaifu has been confirmed as one that was released over 500km away in Kyoto on Sep. 18. On Oct. 11, an amateur photographer from Fukuoka took the photo of the butterfly, which had a code number written on its wing, and contacted the Osaka Museum of Natural History, the secretariat for a club that researches butterflies. The museum confirmed that the butterfly was tagged and released by one of its club members. Chestnut tiger butterflies are known to migrate as far away as Okinawa and Taiwan in the fall, and they have been spotted in the Dazaifu area previously. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 10/15
