On Mar. 20, Kumamoto City unveiled illustrations of its new ultra-low floor tram to be designed by Eiji Mitooka, the designer of several JR Kyushu trains including the Seven Stars luxury sleeper. The exterior will be dark brown, while the interior will use natural woods, such as maple, to “evoke images of Kumamoto’s forests and water resources.” Dubbed Cocoro (‘heart’ in Japanese), the new two-car tram, which will cost ¥318 million to build, is scheduled to go into service in October.
