According to figures compiled by Nishinippon Shimbun, the total amount of money lost in so-called ‘special fraud’ in Kyushu between January and October reached ¥2.93 billion, almost the same amount lost over the entire year last year. Looking at the seven prefectures, Fukuoka suffered the most losses (¥965 million) followed by Oita (¥534 million) and Nagasaki (¥462 million). Most fraud schemes target the elderly, and there was even one case where one person was bilked of ¥100 million. In Kagoshima, a full 82% of victims were elderly. A large percentage of victims are female (e.g., 60% in Oita and 74% in Saga). ‘Special fraud’ is the National Police Agency’s blanket term for several types of fraud, including ore-ore sagi (‘it’s me, it’s me’ fraud) and furikome sagi (‘wire me money’ fraud). In Fukuoka, the number of cases in which fraudsters demand cash to be sent by mail or courier service is on the rise. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 12/19
