Kyuden May End Renewable Buybacks

Kyushu Electric Power Company is considering ending new renewable energy buyback contracts throughout Kyushu. The company is considering the move because there is more solar power being generated on the island than expected, and it faces potential power supply instability. Kyuden’s buybacks increased dramatically in July 2012 when the national governments fixed-price scheme went in to operation. As of July 31, the company has approximately 3,390,000 kW of buyback contracts on its books. If the company sides to and these contracts, it will be the first major utility to do so in Japan.
