Hiroshi Ogawa was re-elected as the governor of Fukuoka Prefecture yesterday, April 7. In this election, support from the Liberal Democratic Party was split between two candidates leaving Ogawa to run for re-election without the party’s official recommendation. However, being backed by some of the party’s congress members and other key figures, Ogawa defeated two other candidates, Kazuhisa Takeuchi (official LDP candidate) and Kiyoshi Shinada (recognized candidate of Japanese Communist Party) by a vast margin, gaining 1.29 million votes. Voter turnout in this governor election was 42.72%, an increase of 3.87% compared to the previous election. This will be his third term in office as the prefectural governor.
