Itoshima Kakigoya – Oyster Hut Guide 2026-2027

Oyster season at Itoshima’s fishing ports

From autumn through spring, oyster huts, or kakigoya, open at fishing ports around the Itoshima Peninsula. Run by local fishers and fishing cooperatives, they offer a simple seasonal pleasure: order your oysters, gather around a charcoal or gas grill, and cook them at your table.

There’s plenty to enjoy alongside the grilled oysters, from sashimi made with the fishers’ catch to squid, oyster rice, and fried oysters. Each hut has its own menu and services. Some offer outdoor seating where pets are welcome, dishes for children, or help with ordering in other languages.

This guide covers 25 huts across five fishing ports in Itoshima City and Karatomari in Fukuoka City’s Nishi Ward. Fukuoka Now has checked directly with each one to confirm opening details, prices, reservations, ordering methods, and what you can bring. Browse by port, menu, or the services that matter to you to find a hut that suits your visit.

Rice dishes include sea bream ochazuke, served with tea or broth poured over the rice, and seafood kamameshi, rice cooked in an individual pot. Some huts also make their own custard pudding or seasonal desserts.

Before you go

Oysters and the grill are usually charged separately. Grill charges may be per person, per grill, or per table. Oysters may be sold by weight or by the portion, and a portion is not necessarily 1 kg. Check each listing for prices and sales units.

Ordering methods vary. Some huts use QR codes; others take orders through LINE. Each listing also covers foreign-language menus and the language support available when ordering.

Check exactly what you can bring. Bringing your favorite drinks or food can be part of the fun, but rules for alcohol, rice dishes, and seasonings differ from hut to hut. Some prohibit outside meat, seafood, or anything intended for the grill. Follow the hut’s rules for disposing of any rubbish from items you bring, too.

Check reservation conditions, especially for weekends. Some huts limit booking times or the number of reservations they accept. Opening days, prices, and menus may change, so check the hut’s website or social media for the latest information before visiting.

Dress in layers and travel light. It gets warm beside the grill, so wear clothes you can adjust easily. Many huts lend protective jackets to keep your clothes clean. Keep bags to a minimum and bring a pack of wet wipes.

Ask the staff for grilling advice if it’s your first visit. An open shell alone does not mean an oyster is ready to eat. Follow the hut’s instructions and cook oysters thoroughly.

About Itoshima’s oysters and oyster huts

How did the oyster huts begin?

Oyster farming began in Itoshima in the late 1980s as a way for fishers to earn income during winter. They began grilling their oysters and serving them outside their premises. During the 2000s, rows of oyster huts became a familiar sight at the fishing ports, establishing a tradition that is now part of autumn and winter in Itoshima.

Different oysters, different huts

The oysters themselves are another reason to try different huts. Some serve their own brands, raised using distinctive cultivation techniques. Look out for the ways each producer grows its oysters and what is available when you visit.

Some huts offer triploid oysters, which have reduced spawning activity and are less prone to losing condition during the summer spawning season. This helps them stay plump at the start of the oyster hut season. Availability may be limited to certain periods or quantities, so check each listing and the hut’s latest updates.
