In 1634, two women dedicated a new dance to Suwa Shrine. Every year, more and more elaborate dances (including lion and dragon dances from China) were added, until the festival in its present riotous, colorful form emerged. Huge floats, extraordinary costumes and energetic dancers make this a must see.
