Kyushu to Switch from Semesters to Quarters

Kyushu University has decided to adopt a quarter system to go into effect for all classes starting in April 2017. By switching from the current two-semester system, the university hopes to encourage more students to study abroad. Coinciding with this, the University will formulate a new curriculum for its undergraduate colleges next year in an effort to cultivate so-called global human resources. Under the semester system, students had to study abroad for either six months or one year, and in some cases, were unable to complete the required credits for graduation. The new quarter system will allow students to study abroad for shorter periods of time, effectively exposing them to foreign cultures while still enabling them to earn enough credits.  Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 10/1
