An 86 year old woman in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka, is recovering from an Australian Redback spider bite. The woman was bitten Sep 3, when putting on her shoes. The antivenom administered had a use-by-date of August 2012, but as a replacement was unavailable, it was used. Medical Officials from the City have said they will keep proper checks of the use-by-dates of the antivenom it has from now on. Redbacks are deadly Australian spiders thought to have come to Japan on import containers. They have been found near the ports of Fukuoka and Osaka since 2007. The antivenom is very effective, and since its creation, no deaths have been recorded in Australia from Redback bites.
