Experiment Aims To Ease Taxi Congestion in Fukuoka

The Fukuoka City Taxi Association, City Hall and the Fukuoka Prefectural Police are teaming up on a social experiment to halve the number of taxis waiting to pick up passengers at night along National Route 202 (aka Kokutai Road) in Nakasu and Tenjin. On certain days, empty taxis with license plates ending in odd numbers will be restricted from entering the congested area, while on alternating days, the ban will apply to even-numbered taxis. The experiment also calls for a total ban on taxis queuing along certain roads between the hours of 16:00 and 2:00, although this will not be enforced. The experiment will begin on Mar. 2 and is the third such attempt since 2010 at alleviating the taxi congestion problem in Nakasu. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 2/25
