Fukuoka Police Issue 90 Warnings To Cyclists

On June 1, revisions to the Road Transportation Act mandating safety courses for bicycle riders who violate cycling rules went into effect. Police throughout Japan are stepping up efforts to catch cyclists committing 14 different violations, including riding while intoxicated and ignoring traffic signals. Riders who commit two or more violations within three years will need to take a rider safety course at a cost of ¥5,700. Riders who fail to take the course will be fined up to ¥50,000. On the morning of June 1, Fukuoka Prefectural Police conducted a patrol and verbally warned 90 riders who ignored signals or were riding with earbuds in, among other violations. A police official said he hopes people will take this opportunity to reacquaint themselves with the rules so they can avoid causing, or falling victim to, bicycle accidents.
