Aug. 19, Google announced two notable additions to its online Cultural Institute – incorporating new material from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. A collection of images and artifacts left behind after the bombings can be viewed online, conveying the enormous sense of human loss associated with the events. The purpose of Google Cultural Institute is to help users discover exhibitions and collections from museums and archives all around the world. You can use the site to explore cultural treasures in extraordinary detail. On the landing page of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum gallery on Cultural Institute, a message says “We will continue to relay a message of peace from Nagasaki, a message passed on by the survivors, who overcome great difficulties. In the hope that the people of the world can join hands and face a future free of nuclear weapons.” The new additions coincide with the recent anniversaries of the two WW2 bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which took place in 1945 on August 6th and 9th, respectively.
