The Contemporary Art Museum of Kumamoto in Kumamoto City borrowed some painted folding screens from the city of Konan, Kochi Prefecture, for an exhibition in July 2010. They applied chemicals to five of screens, which are designated as tangible cultural properties of the prefecture, and the chemicals changed the paint colors. The museum recently announced it would apply water to the surface of the works to remove the chemicals, which would take three years. They will also be liable for the 20 million yen restoration expense.
