More Fukuoka Fruits To Be Exported To Asia

The JA agricultural cooperatives in 15 fruit-producing prefectures, including six prefectures of Kyushu, have teamed up to export strawberries and other fresh, seasonal fruits abroad. The initiative, which will begin in October, entails the establishment of dedicated sales counters in Hong Kong and three other countries/regions. Each prefecture will take turns selling its seasonal goods at the shops. The plan is gaining attention as the first step toward a coordinated “Japan-wide” export scheme. This scheme was undertaken in an effort to meet the rising demand for Japanese fruit in Asia. The participants are the six prefectures of Kyushu except Saga, Hokkaido, Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Yamagata, Miyagi, Yamanashi, Tokushima and Ehime prefectures. They will begin by selling six items—strawberries, peaches, grapes, apples, Japanese pears and melons—in high-end supermarkets in Hong Kong, Taipei, Bangkok and Moscow. Distribution will be handled by Fukuoka-based Fukuoka Agricultural Products Trading Co., Ltd. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 9/14
