This week the entire length of Hakata Kawabata Shotengai was decorated with large, colorful paper decorations hung from the ceiling of the shopping arcade. The decorations are the same ones used in the “Sendai Tanabata Festival” last August in Sendai City, one of the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. The city of Sendai has been sending the decorations to Fukuoka as a gesture of thanks for support they have received from Fukuoka since disaster. On August 10, theses decorations will be replaced with the decorations used in this year’s festival in Sendai and be on display until August 28.
